Can you translate your own koseki?

Free koseki translation templates are easy to find, and for some purposes they work. Whether you can use one depends entirely on who you are submitting to. Here are the actual rules, and the mistakes that get DIY translations sent back.

When DIY is fine

If the recipient is informal — a school wanting to understand a family relationship, a landlord, your own records — a careful self-translation costs nothing and works. The line is wherever an authority will make a decision based on the document. At that point the certification, not the translation, is what you are actually paying for.
