Japanese translation for Australian visa and citizenship applications
For visa and citizenship applications, the Department of Home Affairs states that translators outside Australia do not have to be NAATI accredited — the translation must list the translator’s name, address, telephone number, and qualifications and experience, in English.
Where NAATI is still required
The NAATI exemption above applies specifically to Department of Home Affairs visa and citizenship applications lodged with translations prepared outside Australia. State agencies operate under different rules: Transport for NSW accepts driver licence translations only from its own approved list of providers, and Victoria's Births, Deaths and Marriages requires NAATI accreditation (or consular translations completed outside Australia). We decline orders for those agencies rather than deliver a translation that would be refused at the counter. The order form asks for your submission destination so this is identified before you pay.
What Australian Department of Home Affairs actually requires
“In Australia, use a translator accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). Translators outside Australia do not have to be NAATI accredited. For every translation include the translator’s: full name / address and telephone number / qualifications and experience in the language they are translating. Provide all translator details in English.”

Common questions
Do I need a NAATI-certified translation for an Australian visa if I apply from outside Australia?
No. The Department of Home Affairs states in its application help text that translators outside Australia do not have to be NAATI accredited. The translation must include the translator’s full name, address, telephone number, and qualifications and experience, in English — all of which appear on our Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
Does this cover citizenship applications too?
Yes. The same wording appears in the citizenship application help text (elp-h1470). The requirement is consistent across Home Affairs application systems.
Can you translate my documents for an NSW driver licence transfer?
No. Transport for NSW only accepts translations from a closed list of providers (Multicultural NSW, the Department of Home Affairs, and two consulates for specific licences). We decline these orders rather than deliver a translation the counter will refuse.
What happens if the translation details are incomplete?
Home Affairs help text warns that if satisfactory evidence is not provided, the application may be refused — which is why our certificate states the translator’s details and experience exactly as the Department lists them.
