Choosing between a certificate of acceptance and a family register
The receiving authority determines which document you need. The certificate of acceptance (juri shomeisho) is official municipal proof that a marriage or divorce filing was accepted, including the date it took legal effect, and is what most foreign authorities request. If your authority requires a register-based record instead, the family register (koseki) serves that purpose. It records marriages and divorces under each individual’s entry, including any divorce annotations. When a family register is required, immigration authorities generally ask for the full register (tohon, Certificate of All Matters) rather than an individual extract. Submitting proof of marriage for a spouse visa
For US immigration petitions such as the I-130 and I-485, USCIS requires a complete English translation of the document accompanied by the translator's certification of accuracy and competence (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)). For a UK spouse or partner visa, UKVI requires the translation to include the translator's confirmation of accuracy, the date, and the translator's name and contact details. Common questions
Is a juri shomeisho the same as a marriage certificate?
Functionally, yes. Japan does not issue Western-style marriage certificates. Instead, the municipal certificate of acceptance serves as official proof that a marriage or divorce filing was accepted. Most foreign authorities accept this certificate with a certified translation, though some prefer the family register (koseki) entry. Check your receiving authority’s requirements.
Does USCIS need the translation notarized?
No. USCIS requires a complete English translation accompanied by a certification stating that the translation is complete and accurate and that the translator is competent to translate (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)). The signed certificate provided with every order includes both statements. Notarization is not required.
How is a divorce by agreement (kyogi rikon) shown in the translation?
It is translated exactly as written on the certificate, rendered consistently as “divorce by agreement.” Because a certified translation must accurately reflect the original text without editorial additions, background explanations of Japanese divorce procedures are not included.
