When applying for a spouse visa, remarrying, or updating your name abroad, foreign authorities require official proof of your Japanese marriage or divorce, submitted in English with a signed certificate of accuracy. This proof is provided by a municipal certificate of acceptance (juri shomeisho) or a family register entry, and we also translate the acceptance notice (juri no oshirase) that some city offices hand you when you file. Certificate of acceptance or family register: which should you submit?
The receiving authority determines which document you need. The certificate of acceptance (juri shomeisho) is official municipal proof that a marriage or divorce filing was accepted, including the date it took legal effect. If your authority requires a register-based record instead, the family register (koseki) serves that purpose. It records marriages and divorces under each individual’s entry, including any divorce annotations. When a family register is required and the authority does not say which form, the full register (tohon, Certificate of All Matters) is the safer choice than an individual extract; Canada's IRCC, for example, asks for the tohon in family-class applications. Submitting proof of marriage for a spouse visa
For US immigration petitions such as the I-130 and I-485, USCIS requires a complete English translation of the document accompanied by the translator's certification of accuracy and competence (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)). For a UK spouse or partner visa, UKVI requires the translation to include the translator's confirmation of accuracy, the date, and the translator's name and contact details. Questions before you order
Is a juri shomeisho the same as a marriage certificate?
Functionally, yes. Japan does not issue Western-style marriage certificates. Instead, the municipal certificate of acceptance serves as official proof that a marriage or divorce filing was accepted. Most foreign authorities accept this certificate with a certified translation, though some prefer the family register (koseki) entry. Check your receiving authority’s requirements.
I only have the acceptance notice (juri no oshirase). Can you translate it?
Yes. Send it as it is and we translate it with the same signed certificate. The notice is not the formal certificate of acceptance, so if you are unsure whether your receiving party accepts it, ask them before you pay; the city office that accepted your filing issues the certificate of acceptance if they need it.
Does USCIS need the translation notarized?
No. USCIS requires a complete English translation accompanied by a certification stating that the translation is complete and accurate and that the translator is competent to translate (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)). The signed certificate provided with every order includes both statements. Notarization is not required.
How is a divorce by agreement (kyogi rikon) shown in the translation?
It is translated exactly as written on the certificate, rendered consistently as “divorce by agreement.” Because a certified translation must accurately reflect the original text without editorial additions, background explanations of Japanese divorce procedures are not included.
